Sumbul belonged to a group of Serb Muslims who were targeted as enemies by Austria Hungary and persecuted because of their ethnicity. He died in Austro-Hungarian concentration camp in Arad. BiographySumbul and his family that included his sister, for certain period of time lived in Sarajevo suburb known as Kovači.[5] Sumbul was one of the founders of Muslim Sokol movement in Sarajevo.[6] He was member of Young Bosnia.[7] In 1912, after the death of Osman Đikić, the editing of Gajret was entrusted to Avdo Sumbul.[8] In 1914 he was one of the editors of the magazine Vakat, published in Sarajevo.[9] Vladimir Ćorović emphasize that government of Austria-Hungary perceived and treated Muslims who self-declared themselves as Serbs as enemies of the interest of their state and organized their systematic persecution.[10] Because of his anti-Austrian and pro-Serbian activities, Sumbul was interned to concentration camp in Arad concentration camp[11][12][13] where he soon died.[14]LegacySumbul's remanats were transferred to Sarajevo where his grave is today, in the courtyard of Ali Pasha Mosque.[15] In 1934, based on the order of Yugoslav king Alexander I of Yugoslavia, a turbe mausoleum was built in honor of Avdo Sumbul and Behdžed Mutavelić.[16] This mausoleums are part of symbolic unity with Chapel of Vidovdan's martyrs on Koševo Christian Orthodox cemetery.[17] A street in Sarajevo bears Sumbul's name in his honor.[18] References1. ^{{cite web |title=Ali-pasha mosque with harem, the architectural ensemble |url=http://old.kons.gov.ba/main.php?id_struct=50&lang=4&action=view&id=2523 |publisher=Commission to Preserve National Monuments |accessdate=9 February 2019}} 2. ^{{cite book|last=Pelletier|first=René|title=Chez les yougoslaves, de la Save à l'Adriatique: Sarajevo et sa région|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=b5AnAQAAMAAJ|year=1934|publisher=Budé|page=82|quote=Avdo (1) Sumbul Secrétaire de « Gajret » Né le 27-IV-1884 à Sarajevo Mort pour la liberté de son peuple dans les casemates d'Arad le 8-Il-1915}} 3. ^{{cite book|last=Hadžijahić|first=Muhamed|title=Od tradicije do identiteta: geneza nacionalnog pitanja bosanskih Muslimana|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=RNZBAAAAYAAJ|year=1990|publisher=Islamska zajednica|page=135|quote=...srpski orijentirani Avdo Sumbul}} 4. ^{{cite book|title=Sveske Zadužbine Ive Andrića|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=GmZXAAAAYAAJ|year=1996|publisher=Zadužbina|page=127}} 6. ^{{cite book|last=Hadžijahić|first=Muhamed|title=Od tradicije do identiteta: geneza nacionalnog pitanja bosanskih Muslimana|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=RNZBAAAAYAAJ|year=1990|publisher=Islamska zajednica}} 7. ^{{cite web |last1=Jergović |first1=Miljenko |title=Ulica Avde Sumbula |url=https://www.radiosarajevo.ba/kolumne/miljenko-jergovic/ulica-avde-sumbula/176392 |website=Radio Sarajevo |publisher=Radio Sarajevo |accessdate=17 February 2019 |date=5 January 2015 |quote=Obojica su bili aktivisti Gajreta, zaneseni srpskim pijemontizmom, mladobosanci i čisti idealisti}} 8. ^{{cite book|last=književnost|first=Institut za jezik i književnost u Sarajevu.
