It was established in 2016 by CEO Michael T. Suffredini, former program manager of the International Space Station at Johnson Space Center.[1][2][3] The company has over 60 employees, most of them with experience from NASA and NASA contractors. In 2018, Axiom contracted famed French designer Philippe Starck, who also happens to be the son of an aerospace engineer and a space enthusiast, to design the interior of the future Axiom Station's modules. Renderings of the habitat show a chamber with walls that are covered with tufted padding and studded with hundreds of color-changing LEDs.[4] The Axiom modules will first link with the ISS. Upon retirement of the ISS, the Axiom module will be joined by additional elements that together will function as the Axiom International Commercial Space Station. Axiom plans to conduct astronaut training for commercial astronauts, to host governments and commercial partners, as well as space tourists. For a space tourist, the ticket price for an eight day stay on the station will be $55 million, with the package also including 15 weeks of training on Earth. Initially, the space tourist will fly with a professional astronaut. Aside from a comfortable interior designed by Starck, the station will also have amenities including high-speed Wi-Fi, video screens, picture windows and a glass-walled cupola — which Axiom calls "the largest window observatory ever constructed for the space environment." Axiom's current aim is to line up private astronaut customers and space tourists.[5] The company has raised a small amount of money to support its operations until NASA awards a port on the ISS for its module. Once a port is awarded, the company will seek further investment to begin building the module itself. See also
