"Bad Guy" (stylized in all lowercase) is a song by American singer Billie Eilish. It was released on March 29, 2019, through Darkroom and Interscope Records.[1] The song serves as the fifth single from Eilish's debut studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019), as confirmed by Billboard.[1] The music video was also released on March 29. The song debuted atop the charts in Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, and at number two in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Sweden.

Background

On March 20, 2018, Eilish announced that she was working on her debut album.[2] The album was released a year later, on March 29, 2019. "Bad Guy" was simultaneously announced as the fifth single from the album.[1]

Composition

"Bad Guy" is composed in the key of G minor and consists of two parts; the first has a moderately fast tempo of 135 beats per minute while Eilish's vocals span a range of F3 to C6, and the second is a spoken word segment which has a slow tempo of 60 beats per minute.[3] It is a pop-trap[4] song which uses a bass, a kick-drum and amplified finger snaps in its production.[5]

Critical reception

Chris DeVille from Stereogum described the song as a "low-key banger" and drew comparisons to the likes of Lorde and Fiona Apple.[6] Chloe Gilke of Uproxx called the track a "glitchy, twitchy pop-trap anthem and an immediate artistic statement".[4]

Music video

An accompanying music video for "Bad Guy" was released on March 29, 2019 on Eilish's YouTube channel.[4] It was directed by Dave Meyers.[7] The video begins with the first track on the album "!!!!!!!" playing before Eilish kicks in a yellow wall. The rest of the video features shots of her frantically dancing around while it repeatedly switches to scenes of Eilish getting a nosebleed and feeding pigeons.[8] The video closes out with the singer sitting on the back of a man doing push-ups in a sparsely red-lit room.[9]
