She was the first mare and the first Irish-trained horse to win the race. She was known as "The Sligo Mare."[2] BackgroundBallinode was a chestnut mare bred in Ireland. She was one of the few horses of any consequence sired by Machakos, a son of the Coventry Stakes winner Desmond. Ballinode's dam, Celia, was a half-sister to the Ascot Gold Cup winner Love Wisely.[2] During her racing career she was owned by Christopher Bentley and trained in Ireland by Frank Morgan.[3] The mare was named after a village in County Sligo where Bentley lived.[4] Racing careerIn her early racing career Ballinode won several races in Ireland, acquiring a reputation for being fast but making occasional jumping errors. In March 1924 she was sent to the Cheltenham Festival for the first time and finished second in the National Hunt Handicap Chase[3] A month later she finished eighth in the Grand National. In the following season she returned to Britain for the autumn meeting at Aintree Racecourse and won the Grand Sefton Steeplechase, beating Ardeen into second place.[5] She won again at Nottingham Racecourse in February 1925. On 11 March 1925 she was one of four horses to contest the second running of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and started the 3/1 second favourite.[6] The other three runners were the odds-on favourite Alcazar, the 1924 runner-up Conjuror and the National Hunt Chase winner Patsey V. Ridden by Ted Leader the Irish mare settled in second place behind Alcazar and the pair soon drew well clear of the other two runners. Ballinode took the lead at the second last and won very easily by five lengths.[3][7] Eighteen days later the mare started 10/1 second favourite for the Grand National but failed to complete the course.[8] Assessment and honoursIn their book, A Century of Champions, based on the Timeform rating system, John Randall and Tony Morris rated Ballinode a "poor" Gold Cup winner.[9] She is remembered in the name of Ballinode Close, a residential street in Cheltenham.[10][11] Pedigree{{Pedigree|name = Ballinode (IRE), chestnut mare, 1916[1] |f = Machakos (IRE) 1903 |m = Celia 1905 |ff = Desmond (GB) 1896 |fm = Canterbury Belle (GB) 1894 |mf = Veles (GB) 1898 |mm = Lovelorn (GB) 1888 |fff = St Simon |ffm = L'Abbesse de Jouarre |fmf = Tristan |fmm = Re-Echo |mff = Isinglass |mfm = Velleda |mmf = Phillamon |mmm = Gone |ffff = Galopin |fffm = St Angela |ffmf = Trappist |ffmm = Festa |fmff = Hermit |fmfm = Thrift |fmmf = Reverberation |fmmm = Mabille |mfff = Isonomy |mffm = Dead Lock |mfmf = Robert the Devil |mfmm = Idun |mmff = Solon |mmfm = Satanella |mmmf = The Lizard |mmmm = Vanish (Family 11-e)[2] }} References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.pedigreequery.com/ballinode|title=Ballinode pedigree |publisher=Pedigree Online |date=2016-03-19 |accessdate=2016-03-19}} {{Cheltenham Gold Cup winners}}2. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Families/Family11e.htm |title=Scandal - Family 11-e |publisher=Thoroughbred Bloodlines |date= |accessdate=2014-08-16}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{cite book|last=Harman|first=Bob|title=The Ultimate Dream: The History of the Cheltenham Gold Cup| publisher=Mainstream Publishing|year=2000| isbn = 1-84018-381-0}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.independent.ie/sport/horse-racing/cheltenham/richard-forristal-on-all-14-irish-winners-of-the-cheltenham-gold-cup-31047875.html|title=All 14 Irish winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup|author=Richard Forristal|date=7 March 2015|work=Irish Independent}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH19251223.2.24&srpos=3&e=-------10--1----0Ballinode--|title=The Turf in England|date=3 December 1925|publisher=New Zealand Herald}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Abelson|first1=Edward|last2=Tyrrel|first2=John| title=The Breedon Book of Horse Racing Records|publisher=Breedon Books Publishing |year=1993|isbn=978-1-873626-15-3}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000321/19250311/026/0004 |title=1925 Gold Cup |date=11 March 1925|publisher=Derby Daily Telegraph |accessdate=15 November 2015}}{{subscription required|s}} 8. ^{{cite book|last=Green|first=Reg | title=The History of the Grand National: A Race Apart| publisher=Hodder & Stoughton|year=1993|isbn = 0-340-58515-3}} 9. ^{{cite book|last1=Morris| first1=Tony|last2=Randall|first2=John|title=A Century of Champions|publisher= Portway Press|year=1999|isbn=9781901570151}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.cheltenham.gov.uk/directory_record/45863/ballinode_close |title=Ballinode Close |publisher=Cheltenham Borough Council |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160402121021/http://www.cheltenham.gov.uk/directory_record/45863/ballinode_close |archivedate=2016-04-02 }} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.cheltenham4u.co.uk/swindonvillage_history.asp?area=Swindon+Village%2C+Wyman%27s+Brook |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100218123647/http://www.cheltenham4u.co.uk/swindonvillage_history.asp?area=Swindon+Village%2C+Wyman%27s+Brook |dead-url=yes |archive-date=2010-02-18 |title=Cheltenham Areas: History of Swindon Village and Wyman's Brook |publisher=cheltenham4u.co.uk }} 7 : 1916 racehorse births|Racehorses bred in Ireland|Racehorses trained in Ireland|Thoroughbred family 11-e|Cheltenham Gold Cup winners|Cheltenham Festival winners|National Hunt racehorses |
