Bapu Padmanabha, also known as Bapu Flute, is an Indian music director and flutist who performs Hindustani classical music on his bansuri, a type of bamboo flute. He was born on 18 November 1978 in Harihar which is in Davanagere District of Karnataka state in India.

Personal life

Bapu hosts flute and mantra lessons for a core group of students at his private residence in South India.

Musical training

Bapu's grandfather Bheema Rao was a harmonium player, who started to guide Bapu in the essence of classical music on that instrument. Bapu's younger sister was a singer who was learning Hindustani classical music under the noted musician Shivaraj Gavaayi; Bapu started playing according to her musical notes.

Musical style and impact

Adept in Hindustani Classical Music, Mantra Chantings, New Age, Film Score, Ambient Music, and World Music, Bapu is noted for composing music for the National Award Winner film Allama and Bapu's love for experimenting with Mantra sounds. Bapu used Carnatic, Hindustani and Lounge music as the tools of expression for Allama Prabhu’s Vachanas. Bapu's soft and restrained musical style has varied meditative albums to his credit.[1]

Experiment with Mantra Sound

Bapu’s albums and frequent performances incorporate cutting-edge experiments with mantras. The introduction of Voice-Mixing “low” “middle” and “high” octaves of Mantra Chants (as featured in Rudras, 2013) has been one of his unparalleled contributions as a musician.

A Music C.D. entitled Music as Therapy by Bapu Padmanabha of Harihar, Karnataka State was released by External Affairs Government of India in order to acquaint foreign cultural delegates with Indian classical music.[2]
