The battle occurred at a time in which the Franks were expanding southwards into Gaul under their leader Clodion. In 431, he was surprised at Helena, near modern day Hélesmes, by a large Roman army under the command of Flavius Aetius, the Roman Military Governor of Gaul. Clodion was thoroughly defeated, although he managed to capture Cambrai and advance his territory to the river Somme. Sources
