Batushka are a Polish black metal band formed by Krzysztof Drabikowski[1] in Białystok, Poland, in 2015. Their music and lyrics, written exclusively in Russian, are inspired by the Eastern Orthodox Church.[2] The band members wear habits and eastern orthodox schemas during live performances to conceal their identities.

Name

The word Batushka (Russian Cyrillic: Батюшка) is the titular equivalent of a hieromonk in Eastern Orthodoxy.

History

The group released the single Yekteníya VII in November 2015, prior to their debut album Litourgiya in December. Both recordings were released through Witching Hour Productions, owned by vocalist Bartłomiej Krysiuk.[3]

Following some regional touring, concerts in Russia and Belarus were also planned, but were canceled due to protests[4][5][6] and alleged death threats made against them.[7]

In 2016, together with the Behemoth and Bölzer, the group embarked on a concert tour in Poland called Rzeczpospolita Niewierna (English Translation: The Republic of the Unfaithfiul). In 2017 they performed at the Wacken Open Air and Brutal Assault festival in 2017.

In October 2017, the band were signed to Metal Blade Records in the US.[8]

Split with key members

On 23 December 2018, Drabikowski announced via the Batushka Instagram account that he had decided to part ways with vocalist Bartłomiej Krysiuk 'due to innappropriate behaviour on his part'. In the same post, Drabikowski stated that 'There were attempts to take my creation Batushka away from me' and 'the upcoming album ‘панихида’ (English: Requiem) will not feature his voice'.[9]

The following week, the post was taken down and a new post stated that Drabikowski 'was told earlier this month that he would not participate in Batushka activities as we move into 2019' and that any pages operated by him were to be shut down based on a claim of 'based on intellectual property and trademark ownership'[10].

In a counter-claim, with Drabikowski still retaining access to the Batushka YouTube account, he uploaded a video statement claiming that Krysiuk had been pressing him to release the new album and, when Drabikowski disagreed, Krysiuk then 'hired musicians to produce an album that he planned to release as the new Batushka record, behind (his) back!' He stated further that "I have taken legal action and have been advised by my lawyer to not say anything further. All the new pictures you see on the website and Facebook page are of Krysiuk and random people like his son pretending to be Batushka."[11]

Despite the uncertainty of the band's status, tour dates have been committed to from June 2019 and onwards.
