'The Beeston Junction–Hunslet Goods railway was a freight-only railway line in West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom with a length of {{convert|3.75|mi|km|1}}. It connected the GNR main line with the Hunslet goods yard which is actually located in Knowsthorpe on the left bank of the River Aire. HistoryThe line was opened on 2 January 1899 by the Great Northern Railway.[1] A connection from Hunslet Goods to Neville Hill on the North Eastern Railway was opened in the same year.[2] It had been planned by the Hunslet Railway which was founded in 1893, but became part of the GNR in 1894.[1] The section between Parkside Junction and Hunslet Goods closed on 3 January 1966, the remaining section from Beeston Junction to Parkside Junction closed on 3 July 1967. The swing bridge over the Aire and Calder Navigation was demolished in 1977.[1] RouteFrom Beeston Junction the line turned east and crossed over the Middleton Railway and the Midland Main Line. A tramway had already connected Middleton New Pit, a coal mine, with the River Aire since 1755, and the goods line followed its route. Bridges led it over the Aire and Calder Navigation and the River Aire.[2] The bridge across the Aire and Calder Navigation Company was built as a swing bridge, known as Knowsthorpe swing bridge, as the canal company intended to operate their waterway as a ship canal for sea-going vessels. However, no machinery was ever installed.[1] RemainsHunslet Goods yard is now used as a stone terminal for the Tarmac company and is served from Neville Hill. Buffer stops at the southeastern end close off the former route to Beeston Junction on the left bank of the River Aire. Only a stone pier remains of the demolished Aire and Calder Navigation swing bridge. South of the canal, the former line has been built over, and near Hunslet Carr about {{convert|0.75|mi|km|1}} of its alignment are now used by the M621 motorway. The following stretch of the line has been built over, and only a short section near Beeston Junction and Ring Road Beeston Park can still be followed as a footpath.[1]ReferencesExternal links
