Ben Weprin (born June 28, 1978) is the founder and CEO of AJ Capital Partners,[1] a private real estate company based in Chicago, Illinois.[2][3][4]

Early life and education

Weprin was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio.[5] In 2001, Weprin graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and went on to earn his MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.[6]

Career

In 2008, Weprin founded AJ Capital Partners.[7][4] Its strategy was to build a portfolio of hotels, resorts and other luxury properties.[8] Its projects have included restorations of existing hotels and development of new properties, many of them located in Chicago.[2][9][10] The company’s first investment was in the California-based luxury hotel and resort management company, Auberge Resorts.[11][12] AJ Capital Partners’ past portfolio includes Isle De France in Saint Barth, sold to LVMH in 2013, The Raleigh in South Beach, Florida sold in 2012, Hotel Lincoln in Chicago sold in 2015, Soho House Chicago sold in 2018, .[2][13][14][15][16]

Weprin’s operating portfolio includes community-based assets which AJ Capital Partners restored and reopened including Chicago Athletic Association and Thompson Chicago Chicago, both in his hometown, and The Pontchartrain Hotel in New Orleans’ Garden District.[2][17][18][19][20][21] Also in his operating portfolio are Calistoga Ranch in Napa Valley, California, The Armory in San Francisco, California and Thompson Nashville.[2][22][23][24][25][26]

In 2014, Weprin announced the launch of AJ Capital Partners’ proprietary brand, Graduate Hotels, a collection of boutique hotels in university-anchored markets.[27] As of 2018, there are 11 hotels in the division located in Athens, Georgia; Tempe, Arizona; Madison, Wisconsin; Charlottesville, Virginia; Oxford, Mississippi; Ann Arbor, Michigan[28]; Berkeley, California[29]; Lincoln, Nebraska, Richmond, Virginia, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Iowa City, Iowa.[3][30][31][32][33] In the first quarter of 2017, the brand announced plans to expand to Seattle, Washington and Bloomington, Indiana by 2018,[34] as well as a partnership with Cornell University to open a location on Roosevelt Island, New York in 2020.[35][36][37] The hotel group announced additional plans of expansion to Annapolis, Maryland, New Haven, Connecticut, Columbus, Ohio, Providence, Rhode Island, Eugene, Oregon, Nashville, Tennessee, State College, Pennsylvania, Columbia, South Carolina and Palo Alto, California.[38][39]

Personal life

In 2005, Weprin married Mary Ann Mounger in an interfaith Presbyterian and Judaism ceremony on a farm in Columbia, Tennessee. The couple has three daughters.
