Best Cellular is an American owned and operated mobile virtual network operator (MVNO)[1] based in Hotchkiss, Colorado.

The company was formerly known as Boss Cellular[2], but after a buyout of BestCellular.com in 2016, the brands were combined and officially marketed as “Best Cellular”.[3]

History

  • 1998 : Foundation of Best Cellular.[4]
  • 2012 : Foundation by Curtis McCoy, Connie Wyatt, and Paul Silzell under the name, “Boss Cellular”.[5]
  • 2016 : Buyout of BestCellular.com, the brands were combined to become “Best Cellular, Inc.”
  • 2017 : The virtual operator began acquiring subscribers belonging to its failing MVNO rivals, in a bid to boost its competitiveness.[6]
  • 2017 : The company received a service mark in the supplemental register for the term, “Best Cellular” from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.[7]

Products and Services

  • Core Best Cellular products include a line of prepaid no-contract cell phone service plans. Plans range from $15 to $60.[8]
  • The company offers a small lineup of retail devices as well as BYOD (bring your own device) activation.
  • The company is not an Apple partner at this time.[9]

Marketing

  • Best Cellular's marketing focus is directed at reaching consumers aged 50 and older and other basic phone users.[10]
  • Under their dealer-focused setup, Best Cellular seeks to enlarge their nationwide presence.[5][10][11][12]

Reception and Criticism

Although the company seems to be targeting lower data consumption customers[15], some potential customers have mentioned that Best Cellular does not offer enough mobile data when compared to the larger MVNOs.[16]

Best Cellular’s business model does not currently subsidize phone sales or require contracts beyond month-to-month. “Tethering and hotspot are not currently supported on Best Mobile [sic] plans”.[17]

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Like many American mobile virtual network operators, this company allows customers to bring their own device if it supports Verizon (CDMA/LTE), Sprint (CDMA/LTE), or T-Mobile (GSM) networks. SIM cards for BYOD devices can be ordered from Best Cellular customer service or can be purchased from most Best Cellular retail locations. SIM Cards are also available free of charge with activation on the company's website.
