It is a Grade II* listed building. HistoryThe building, which has a 15th century undercroft, was completed in the late 19th century.[1] It became the headquarters of the 2nd East Anglian Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps[2] and, probably, of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Norfolk Regiment as well around that time.[3] The 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Norfolk Regiment, who simply gave their address as "St Giles" (the road behind is St Giles Street),[4] evolved to become the 4th Battalion, the Norfolk Regiment in 1908.[3] The battalion was mobilised at St Giles[4] before being deployed to Gallipoli and then to Egypt and Palestine.[5] The battalion then moved to the Chapel Field Road drill hall (since demolished) later in the war.[3] The Bethel Street properties were subsequently decommissioned and the premises at the front are now used as commercial offices by the Greenhouse Trust.[6] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101372714-42-48-bethel-street-norwich#.WWtp84jysdU|title=42-48, Bethel Street|publisher=British Listed Buildings|accessdate=16 July 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.drillhalls.org/Counties/Norfolk/TownNorwich.htm|title=Norwich|publisher=Drill halls project|accessdate=16 July 2017}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/volmil-england/vinf-ea/nf-4.htm|title=4th Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment|publisher=Regiments.org|accessdate=16 July 2017|deadurl=bot: unknown|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20071109131310/http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/volmil-england/vinf-ea/nf-4.htm|archivedate=9 November 2007|df=dmy-all}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2ky-BAAAQBAJ&pg=PA53&lpg=PA53&dq=St+Gile+4th+Battalion+the+Norfolk+Regiment&source=bl&ots=osJB2H6sKp&sig=fR9XGNcEQ2FMSMyUaf5G6uiIgRw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwia-p-6-o3VAhUPOsAKHT76D3MQ6AEIUjAI#v=onepage&q&f=false|title=British Regiments 1914-1918|first=Brigadier E.
