Blue Ben is also the name of a promontory near East Quantoxhead approximately {{convert|1|km}} from Kilve. LegendVarious versions of the story exist, but the account usually features Blue Ben as dwelling in the shale caves along the Somerset coast, regularly bathing in the nearby waters to cool himself after breathing fire. In order to avoid getting stuck in the extensive mud flats between the water and his lair, he built the limestone causeway there to provide him safe passage. The devil used to watch Blue Ben, and one day decided to capture him for use as a mount.[1] The devil rode him mercilessly through the fires of hell until the dragon escaped, and, in the hurry to get back to the security of his lair, he made the mistake of tramping through the mud flats, and getting stuck in the mud, which gradually consumed him.[2] An alternative version of the story says that he lived inland but went to Kilve to cool off.[3] SkullIn the early 19th century the Blue Lias shale formation outside of Kilve was quarried, during which process the fossilized skull of an Ichthyosaur was uncovered, which was said to be the remains of Blue Ben. The skull is now on permanent display in the Wells and Mendip Museum at Wells, Somerset,[4] or the Museum of Somerset at Taunton.[5][6] References1. ^{{cite book|last1=Barrie|first1=Alexander|title=Sutton Companion to the Folklore, Myths and Customs of Britain|date=2005|publisher=The History Press|isbn=9780750954273|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=6AU7AwAAQBAJ&pg=PT50&lpg=PT50&dq=Blue+Ben+Kilve&source=bl&ots=Sd2ekkL8Rq&sig=84bgpaKXf5t67MIoJVYyM43liKU&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZgZWh2_3OAhUFJ8AKHaLgBdE4ChDoAQhTMA0#v=onepage&q=Blue%20Ben%20Kilve&f=false}} 2. ^1 {{citeweb |title=Blue Ben of Kilve - Mysterious Britain & Ireland |url=http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/england/somerset/legends/blue-ben-of-kilve.html |publisher=Mysterious Britain & Ireland |accessdate=22 July 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090325104417/http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/england/somerset/legends/blue-ben-of-kilve.html# |archive-date=25 March 2009 |dead-url=yes |df=dmy-all }} 3. ^{{cite book|last1=Jacksties|first1=Sharon|title=Somerset Folk Tales|date=2011|publisher=The History Press|isbn=9780752478197|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=QGE7AwAAQBAJ&pg=PT20&lpg=PT20&dq=Blue+Ben+Kilve&source=bl&ots=d8ew-f3GK1&sig=cUyBBck0_cDyTZXDY4qnHmfRrbw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZgZWh2_3OAhUFJ8AKHaLgBdE4ChDoAQhQMAw#v=onepage&q=Blue%20Ben%20Kilve&f=false}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://mysteriousuniverse.org/2015/03/there-be-dragons-here-blue-ben-and-englands-limestone-pavement/ |title=There Be Dragons Here: Blue Ben and Englands Limestone Pavement|publisher=Mysterious Universe|accessdate=7 September 2016}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Hargreaves|first1=Joyce|title=A Little History of Dragons|date=2006|publisher=Wooden Books|isbn=978-1904263487|url=http://woodenbooks.com/browse/dragons/DRG.00031.php}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Snelling|first1=Roy|title=The Dragons of Somerset: And Their Relation to Dragons of the World|date=2015|publisher=Spiritual Genesis|isbn=9781783016327|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=DpgWBgAAQBAJ&pg=PT43&lpg=PT43&dq=Blue+Ben+Kilve&source=bl&ots=K4bi9GK7Lz&sig=pQunCzxisGQwdvj5g_zpaiwaWRA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZgZWh2_3OAhUFJ8AKHaLgBdE4ChDoAQg7MAg#v=onepage&q=Blue%20Ben%20Kilve&f=false}} 2 : European dragons|Somerset folklore |
