词条 | Bondi the staller |
释义 |
FamilyHis family appears to have been Mercian, though it possible they were originally Danish,[4][5] as the name is attested in other English families of Danish extraction.[6] TitlesThe title staller is the equivalent of the French count of the stable from which we derive the modern word "constable".[7][8] He was also called a palatius or palace official.[9] Records of 1065 call him a procuratores and in the Domesday book he is called forestarius(a forester).[10] and stalrus or constabularius.[11] Both titles being French equivalents of the word Staller. He may have been High Sheriff of Bedfordshire for a time.[12] WealthHe is estimated to have held over 40[13] estates. The Domesday Book records he was holder of 30 estates in Buckinghamshire[14] Berkshire, and Hampshire,[15] and Lord of five.[16] HistoricityHe is known from a charter he witnessed in [17] and another at St Albans[18] He held his lands into the early 1070s, and was used by the Normans in their early administration of their new realm, but Bondi did not last in this position for long.[19] The lands of Bondi the Staller appear to have been given to Henry de Ferrers[20] by William the Conqueror. This was part of a process of Normanisation that within a generation saw 64% of the estates in England held by fewer than 150 men. Once the Norman scribes were accustomed to their new land, palace officials (palatius) like Bondi were no longer required.
