Before the building's construction, the site held several single-story retail stores. The building was constructed as social housing, primarily for Turkish immigrants to Germany.[2] The name of the building translates from French to "Hello Sadness".[3] References1. ^{{cite web |last1=Pascucci |first1=Denim |title=AD Classics: Wohnhaus Schlesisches Tor (Bonjour Tristesse) / Álvaro Siza Vieira + Peter Brinkert |url=https://www.archdaily.com/519337/ad-classics-wohnhaus-schlesisches-tor-bonjour-tristesse-alvaro-siza-vieira-peter-brinkert |publisher=ArchDaily}} {{coord|52.49995|13.44346|format=dms|type:landmark_region:DE|display=title}}{{Berlin-struct-stub}}2. ^{{cite book |last1=Methur |first1=Saloni |title=The Migrant's Time: Rethinking Art History and Diaspora |date=2011 |publisher=Sterling and Francine Art Institute}} 3. ^{{cite book |last1=Karl Kresl |first1=Peter |last2=Ietri |first2=Daniele |title=Creating Cities/Building Cities: Architecture and Urban Competitiveness |date=2017 |publisher=Edward Elgar Publishing}} 1 : Buildings and structures in Berlin |
