Personal lifeHe was born in Minsk to a family of Jewish-Soviet origin, formerly the capital of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Byelorussia, and presently the capital of the Republic of Belarus. Fishman immigrated to the U.S. in 1988 with his family. He holds a BA in Russian literature from Princeton University and has written works of non-fiction and literary criticism. Fishman lives in New York City and teaches writing at Princeton University.
