Brad Bradford is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Toronto City Council in the 2018 municipal election.[1] He represents Ward 19 (Beaches—East York).

Prior to his election, Bradford worked as an urban planner in the Chief Planner's Office at the City of Toronto.[1] He also hold a bachelor of environmental studies in urban and regional environments from York University, and a masters in urban planning from the University of Waterloo.[1]

Electoral record

Bradford ran as a progressive candidate, his background in the planner's office cited as proof of his city building intent[2]. However, his endorsement from John Tory left some constituents concerned[3][4] he might not be as progressive as his predecessor, given Tory's former roll as Ontario Conservative Party leader, as well as his association with Nick Kouvalis.[5][6]

2019

During budget deliberations, progressive members of the budget committee, Shelley Carroll and Mike Layton, brought forward several motions intended to improve social and economic equity in the city. However, Bradford voted against all of these motions[7].

Electoral Reform

Councillor Bradford has brought forward a motion on term limits, which in his opinion facilitate a more demographically representative council makeup by eliminating incumbent advantage[8]. Left-leaning councillor Gord Perks has said, "The last thing a government should do is tell people who they are allowed to vote for," while right-leaning councillor Jim Karygiannis seemed in agreement saying, "If our constituents don’t want us they can kick us out."[9]

The motion failed a two thirds vote required for such a change to be debated, and was referred to special committee to determine if a report was necessary. Furthermore, such a change would need to be referred to the province to be passed into law.[10]
