It is written by Grant Nieporte and based on the Christian novel The Impossible, an account of true events written by Joyce Smith with Ginger Kolbaba. The film stars Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Marcel Ruiz, Sam Trammel, and Dennis Haysbert with a cameo by contemporary Christian artist Phil Wickham. Basketball player Stephen Curry is executive producer.[2] A suburban St. Louis teenager who slipped through an icy lake in January 2015 and had no pulse for nearly 45 minutes after he was rescued has made a miraculous recovery, doctors said.[3] Says his father Brian, "he was back out under his own power. Everything is normal, no tell-tale signs." Already strong in faith, John Smith now speaks to church groups and banquets, and has plans to become a minister.[4] His mother, Joyce, wrote a book titled The Impossible, on which the film is based. This will be the first film from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures due to Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox. PlotJohn Smith fell through ice on Lake St. Louis while playing with friends. He was put in a coma after being rescued by first responder Tommy Shine. The film follows his parents Joyce and Brian, whose faith in God keeps their hope alive that John will pull through. Cast
ProductionProducer DeVon Franklin helped the Smith family find a literary agent and then develop the book in a film after it was published.[5] The movie was shot in Manitoba from March to May 2018.[6][7] Locations for the 31-day shoot included Winnipeg, Selkirk, and Portage la Prairie.[8][9] MarketingAn official trailer for the film was released on December 5, 2018 and received more than 30 million views within two days, becoming the most-viewed trailer for a religious film within that timespan.[10] Metz performed "I'll Stand With You" from the film's soundtrack at the 54th Academy of Country Music Awards alongside Carrie Underwood, Lauren Alaina, Maddie & Tae and Mickey Guyton. ReleaseBreakthrough is to be released in North American theaters on April 17, 2019 By Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, and is expected to gross $12-$20 million on its opening weekend.[11] The expectation is also based from the string of successful faith-based films released recently such as Heaven Is for Real[12], which grossed $73 million on a $15 million budget.[5]References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.amctheatres.com/movies/breakthrough-56739|title=Breakthrough|website=AMC Theatres|accessdate=March 5, 2019}} 2. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/stephen-curry-exec-produce-faith-based-film-breakthrough-1153275 |date=2018-10-18 |author=Borys Kit |author2=Scott Feinberg |title=Stephen Curry to Executive Produce Faith-Based Drama 'Breakthrough' (Exclusive)|website=The Hollywood Reporter|language=en|access-date=2018-12-09}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/missouri-teen-submerged-icy-lake-15-minutes-makes-miracle-recovery-n300841 |date=2015-02-05 |title=Missouri Teen Submerged in Icy Lake for 15 Minutes Makes 'Miracle' Recovery|website=NBC News|language=en|access-date=2018-12-10}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/local/miracle-on-ice-becomes-a-book-movie/63-487316551|title=Miracle on ice becomes a book, movie|website=KSDK|access-date=2018-12-10 |author=Kay Quinn |date=2017-10-30}} 5. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://deadline.com/2017/01/john-smith-the-impossible-devon-franklin-miracle-tale-grant-nieporte-1201889423/|title=Fox & DeVon Franklin Set Miracle Tale ‘The Impossible’|last=Fleming, Jr.|first=Mike|date=2017-01-19|website=Deadline|language=en|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2019-03-21}} 6. ^{{cite tweet |author=Roxann Dawson |author-link= |user=roxdaws |number=994288440018657280 |date=2018-05-09 |title=I am heading home after 4 months in Winnipeg shooting my first feature.
