They are within a region historically known as Bréifne. The range has two sub-ranges: the southern Iron Mountains that span across Leitrim and Cavan, and the northern Cuilcagh Mountains that straddle Cavan and Fermanagh.[1] The highest peak is Cuilcagh at {{convert|665|m|ft|abbr=off}}, which is the highest peak in both Cavan and Fermanagh, making it Ireland's only cross-border county top.[2] The Breifne Mountains are very close to the Dartry Mountains and Arigna Mountains, which are also within the historic region of Bréifne.
