}}Brian Sonia-Wallace is a poet (alias RENT Poet), theatre maker, and cultural journalist living in Los Angeles.[1][2]

He was the poet in residence in the Mall of American in June 2017 where he wrote responsive poems for people shopping in the mall, a practice he has employed in a number of different settings.[3] His observations about the experience were published in the Guardian (UK) and generated an active comments section discussing what constitutes poetry.[4] He has also been a 2016 Writer-in-Residence for Amtrak[5] and Artist-in-Residence for the City of Los Angeles. In 2016, Yak Press published his first book of poetry, I Sold These Poems, Now I Want Them Back[6][7].

With collaborator Linda Ravenswood, he developed and performed the play Bike Odyssey LA, an adaptation of Homer on bikes that toured neighborhoods through Los Angeles with support from CICLE, METRO, National Endowment for the Arts, City of Long Beach, and others.[8][9][10]

As a cultural journalist, he has written for KCET,[11] LACMA Unframed,[12] HowlRound,[13] ArtsBeatLA,[14] and others.

In 2011, he traveled to the Ecuadorian Amazon with anthropologist Victor Cova to work with indigenous Shuar people using techniques from Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed.[15] He has attended and presented at several conferences with Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed, Inc.[16]
