It belongs to Picasso's African Period and is considered a Proto-Cubist work. ReceptionJonathan Jones of The Guardian called the work "formidable"[1] and viewed the painting as "an experiment in how brutally you can reduce, simplify, solidify and abstract forms and still produce a picture that is not simply recognisable, but profoundly full of life."[2]References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2001/dec/03/art.artsfeatures |title=Poussin to Picasso |last=Jones |first=Jonathan |publisher=The Guardian |date=December 2, 2001 |accessdate=November 25, 2016}} {{Pablo Picasso}}{{20C-painting-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/jonathanjonesblog/2009/feb/06/pablo-picasso-national-gallery |title=Picasso's eyes perceived the infinite complexity of life |last=Jones |first=Jonathan |publisher=The Guardian |date=February 6, 2009 |accessdate=November 25, 2016}} 3 : 1909 paintings|Paintings by Pablo Picasso|Paintings of the Hermitage Museum |
