Cadence of Hyrule (full title: Cadence of Hyrule — Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda) is an upcoming indie rhythm roguelike video game developed by Brace Yourself Games for the Nintendo Switch video game console. It is a crossover between the video game series Crypt of the NecroDancer and The Legend of Zelda. It is slated for release in Q2 2019.

Gameplay

{{See also|Crypt of the NecroDancer#Gameplay|l1=Gameplay of Crypt of the NecroDancer}}Cadence of Hyrule is a rhythm roguelike video game that combines the Crypt of the NecroDancer and The Legend of Zelda series.[1] The game is played from a top-down perspective. Players may control either Crypt of the NecroDancer protagonist Cadence, The Legend of Zelda protagonist Link, or series namesake Princess Zelda. Levels are randomly designed and features items from The Legend of Zelda series as well as 25 chiptune remixes of The Legend of Zelda music. Players must control their character by moving and attacking to the beat of the music.[2]

Plot

Cadence of Hyrule follows Cadence, who arrives in Hyrule, the setting of multiple The Legend of Zelda video games.[2]

Development

Cadence of Hyrule is being developed by Brace Yourself Games, directed by Crypt of the NecroDancer creator Ryan Clark,[3] and is due to be released for the Nintendo Switch video game console.[1] It began development when Clark approached Nintendo to ask permission to use The Legend of Zelda content as DLC for the Nintendo Switch version of Crypt of the NecroDancer. Clark stated that a mutual interest in the idea grew "faster than they were expecting." The project eventually evolved into a new crossover title. The project was described as a new entry in the Crypt of the NecroDancer series, while also taking care to make sure it works as a Legend of Zelda game as well. Clark stated that he was excited to work with The Legend of Zelda soundtrack, due to the series' compositions as well as the use of instruments as gameplay mechanics.[3] While Nintendo has worked with larger third-party studios and publishers before on titles related to its intellectual property, such as with Ubisoft, Atlus, and Capcom, Cadence of Hyrule is one of the few times Nintendo has given out its properties to a small independent developer.[3]

Composer Danny Baranowsky provides the 25-song soundtrack, which remixes several classic Zelda songs.[4] Part of the pixel art style for the game was developed by members of the Sonic Mania art team.[5]

The game was announced on March 20, 2019, at the end of a Nintendo Direct 'Nindies' showcase[6] and is planned to be released in Q2 2019.[2]

Reception

The Verge called the style of the game a "welcome shot of retro charm" when compared to the more realistic Breath of the Wild.[1]
