The Caerleon Arts Festival ({{lang-cy|Gwyl Celf Caerllion}}) is a yearly arts, literature and entertainment event in the town of Caerleon, near Newport, Wales. It is held in July, setting up over a week period, with a main weekend hosting the headline events. The festival will conclude in 2019 on the 13th and 14th July.

History

{{Main|The Mynde (Caerleon)}}

The festival was founded in 2003 by Dr Russell Rhys, a local GP.[1] Born in Llanelli to a coal miner father, he studied medicine at King's College London, going on to meet Welsh emigrés including renowned poet Dylan Thomas. In 1969 he was elected to Gwent County Council and befriended the late Newport West MP Paul Flynn.

Dr Rhys resided at the Mynde, an Iron and Medieval Age fortress dating back to Roman activity in 75 AD. In Nennius' 830 AD work Historia Brittonum, Caerleon is a potential site for 'The City Of The Legion' referred to, making the Mynde a oft-rumoured site for the burial place of King Arthur, who many believe had close ties to the town. The land and walls for The Mynde were expanded to their present form in 1839 to protect its tenant, local industrialist John Jenkins, from the Chartist protesters fighting for universal suffrage in Newport. The site has recently been acquired by the nearby Celtic Manor Resort for use as a retreat and luxury residence.[2]

Establishing the Festival

Dr Rhys acquired old stables and buildings on the site of the present Ffwrwm arts centre. The site remains a cultural centre today, set in 18th century gardens. The site includes a Celtic Arts & Crafts store, sculpture garden, independent restaurant, and a number of small businesses.[3]

In 2003 he started the Festival, inspired by Hay-on-Wye, and he was responsible for commissioning the sculptural works. Wood workers were invited from as far as China, expenses paid, but required to preserve their work in the village.[1] Today Caerleon and the nearby area are surrounded by mythical-styled wood sculptures, depicting such ideas as Arthurian knights of the Round Table or Welsh Mabinogion.[4] Today there are over 100 works, many by Welsh artist Ed Harrison.[1]

The modern Festival

The present day festival continues the tradition of arts, crafts, and sculpture set by Dr Rhys, but now expands to include music, literature, dance and entertainment. It regularly invites musicians from other countries to perform.

The festival has expanded to venues along the River Usk, with music and performances at the Hanbury Arms on the riverfront, as well as at the 17th century Bell Inn and the Festival Field.

The 2019 organisers have made a particular focus on musical diversity, with an offering of folk, jazz, blues, rock and roll, and Middle Eastern dance.[5]

The Literature on the Lawn festival is the 'fringe' literary festival, held in the garden of the Priory Hotel. It offers literary discussions, readings, and entertainment, hosted around the 5th-8th July each year prior to the arts festival.[6]

Supporters

The event is supported by the local Caerleon Festival charity and its members, as well as a wide range of local businesses, including Literature Wales, ABP, Cadw, Sainsbury's, The Celtic Manor Resort, Brains Brewery, and Welsh Government.
