}} Caladenia longifimbriata, commonly known as the fringed spider orchid[3] or green-comb spider orchid,[4] is a rare species of orchid endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It has a single, hairy leaf and one or two green, red and white flowers with a long labellum fringe and only occurs in a few scattered populations between Jerramungup and Esperance. DescriptionCaladenia longifimbriata is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single erect, hairy leaf, {{convert|80-120|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|6-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. One or two green, red and white flowers {{convert|60-80|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|50-60|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a stalk {{convert|250-350|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} tall. The sepals and have thin brown, club-like glandular tips {{convert|8-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The dorsal sepal is erect, {{convert|40-50|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are {{convert|35-50|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide and downturned near the base but deflected upwards nearer the tip. The petals are {{convert|25-35|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and spread widely or slightly downwards. The labellum is {{convert|10-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|15-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and green and white with a red tip and is delicately hinged to the column. The sides of the labellum have thin teeth up to {{convert|10|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and there are four or more rows of densely crowded, red calli up to {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long in the centre. Flowering occurs from August to September.[1][2][3]Taxonomy and namingCaladenia longifimbriata was first described in 2001 by Stephen Hopper and Andrew Phillip Brown from a specimen collected near Jerramungup and the description was published in Nuytsia.[4] The specific epithet (longifimbriata) is derived from the Latin words longus meaning "long"[5]{{rp|494}} and fimbriatus meaning "fringed" or "fibrous"[5]{{rp|246}} in reference to the long labellum fringe.[2]Distribution and habitatFringed spider orchid occurs in scattered populations between Jerramungup and Esperance in the Esperance Plains and Mallee biogeographic regions where it grows in mallee woodland near temporary streams.[1][2][3][6] ConservationCaladenia fimbriata is classified as "Priority One" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife,[6] meaning that it is known from only one or a few locations which are potentially at risk.[7]References1. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page=91}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q9673727}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dundas|first2=Pat|last3=Dixon|first3=Kingsley|last4=Hopper|first4=Stephen|title=Orchids of Western Australia|date=2008|publisher=University of Western Australia Press|location=Crawley, Western Australia|isbn=9780980296457|page=122}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=142|edition=3rd}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Caladenia longifimbriata|url=https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/574120|publisher=APNI|accessdate=18 February 2017}} 5. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.}} 6. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Caladenia longifimbriata|id=17929}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Conservation codes for Western Australian Flora and Fauna|url=https://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/images/documents/plants-animals/threatened-species/Listings/Conservation%20code%20definitions.pdf|publisher=Government of Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife|accessdate=18 February 2017}} 7 : Caladenia|Orchids of Western Australia|Endemic orchids of Australia|Plants described in 2001|Endemic flora of Western Australia|Taxa named by Stephen Hopper|Taxa named by Andrew Phillip Brown |
