}} Caladenia luteola, commonly known as the lemon spider orchid, is a species of orchid endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It has a single, hairy leaf and up to three lemon-yellow flowers with red stripes on the labellum. It is only known from two small populations near Woodanilling. DescriptionCaladenia luteola is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single erect, hairy leaf, {{convert|80-120|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|3-5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Up to three lemon yellow flowers, {{convert|60-100|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|60-90|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a stalk {{convert|150-250|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The sepals and petals have long, brown, thread-like tips. The dorsal sepal is erect, {{convert|45-70|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and the lateral sepals are {{convert|45-75|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|2-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, spreading stiffly near their base but then drooping. The petals are {{convert|45-65|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, spread slightly upwards near their bases, then drooping. The labellum is {{convert|10-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|8-11|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, cream-coloured to yellow with red or brownish stripes and the tip is curled under. The sides of the labellum have irregular serrations and two rows of broad, anvil-shaped, shiny cream-coloured calli in the centre. Flowering occurs from September to mid-October.[1][2][3]Taxonomy and namingCaladenia luteola was first described in 2001 by Stephen Hopper and Andrew Phillip Brown from a specimen collected near Woodanilling and the description was published in Nuytsia.[4] The specific epithet (luteola) is a Latin word meaning "yellowish"[5] referring to the colour of the flowers.[2]Distribution and habitatLemon spider orchid occurs between Woodanilling and Katanning in the Avon Wheatbelt biogeographic region where it grows on low, sandy hills near salt lakes and temporary creeks.[1][2][3][6] ConservationCaladenia luteola is classified as "Threatened Flora (Declared Rare Flora — Extant)" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife[6] meaning that it is likely to become extinct or is rare, or otherwise in need of special protection.[7]References1. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|pages =105–106}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15287636}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dundas|first2=Pat|last3=Dixon|first3=Kingsley|last4=Hopper|first4=Stephen|title=Orchids of Western Australia|date=2008|publisher=University of Western Australia Press|location=Crawley, Western Australia|isbn=9780980296457|page=64}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=74|edition=3rd}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Caladenia luteola|url=https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/574399|publisher=APNI|accessdate=19 February 2017}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page =872}} 6. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Caladenia luteola|id=17864}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Conservation codes for Western Australian Flora and Fauna|url=https://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/images/documents/plants-animals/threatened-species/Listings/Conservation%20code%20definitions.pdf|publisher=Government of Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife|accessdate=19 February 2017}} 7 : Caladenia|Orchids of Western Australia|Endemic orchids of Australia|Plants described in 2001|Endemic flora of Western Australia|Taxa named by Stephen Hopper|Taxa named by Andrew Phillip Brown |
