}} Caladenia roei is a species of orchid endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It is also known as the common clown orchid,[3] clown orchid, ant orchid, man orchid and jack-in-the-box.[4][5] It has a single erect, hairy leaf and up to three greenish-yellow and red flowers with a relatively broad labellum. It is a common orchid throughout the south-west and is especially common on granite outcrops. DescriptionCaladenia roei is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single erect, hairy leaf, {{convert|60-150|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Up to three greenish-yellow and red flowers {{convert|30-40|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|20-30|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a stalk {{convert|120-300|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The sepals have thick, yellowish-brown, club-like glandular ends {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The dorsal sepal is erect, {{convert|15-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and often curves gently forward. The lateral sepals and petals are about the same size as the dorsal sepal and turn obliquely downward and form a crucifix-like shape. The labellum is {{convert|8-11|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|13-16|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and greenish-yellow with a small red tip which curls under. The sides of the labellum are smooth, lacking teeth but there is a dense band of dark reddish-purple, calli up to {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, in the middle of the labellum. Flowering occurs from August to October.[1][2][3]Taxonomy and namingCaladenia roei was first described in 1873 by Alex George and the description was published in Flora Australiensis.[4][5] The specific epithet (roei) honours John Septimus Roe.[2]Distribution and habitatThe clown orchid is found across a wide area of the south-west of Western Australia from as far north as the Murchison River to as far east as Ravensthorpe where it grows in a range of habitats but is especially common on granite outcrops.[1][2][3][6] ConservationCaladenia roei is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife.[6]References1. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =116}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q9673926}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dundas|first2=Pat|last3=Dixon|first3=Kingsley|last4=Hopper|first4=Stephen|title=Orchids of Western Australia|date=2008|publisher=University of Western Australia Press|location=Crawley, Western Australia|isbn=9780980296457|page=133}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=167|edition=3rd}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Caladenia roei|url=https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/514945|publisher=APNI|accessdate=17 March 2017}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Bentham|first1=George|title=Flora Australiensis|date=1873|publisher=Lovell Reeve & Co.|location=London|page=383|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/26124779#page/397/mode/1up|accessdate=17 March 2017}} 6. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Caladenia roei|id=1614}} 5 : Caladenia|Endemic orchids of Australia|Orchids of Western Australia|Plants described in 1873|Endemic flora of Western Australia |
