It has a single pale green leaf and up to six pale green flowers with faint red stripes and a labellum with a dark purple beard. It is only known from two mountainous areas. DescriptionCalochilus praealtus is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single pale green leaf {{convert|180-400|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|4-8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and fully developed at flowering time. The leaf has a powdery coating and a purplish red base. Between two and six pale green flowers with faint red stripes are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|280-500|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. Individual flowers last for between two and four days. The dorsal sepal is broadly lance-shaped to egg-shaped, {{convert|12-14|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|8-9|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are a similar length but only about half as wide and spread apart from each other. The petals are {{convert|7-8|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, asymmetrically egg-shaped with a small upturned tip. The labellum is flat, {{convert|22-24|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, with short, thick purple calli near its base. The central part of the labellum is covered with dark purple hairs up to {{convert|6|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and there is a glandular tip which is {{convert|15-17|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The column has two yellowish "eyes" joined by a faint ridge. Flowering occurs from December to February but the flowers only last between two and four days.[2][3]Taxonomy and namingCalochilus praealtus was first formally described in 2006 by David Jones from a specimen collected in Mount Kaputar National Park and the description was published in Australian Orchid Research.[4] The specific epithet (praealtus) is a Latin word meaning "very high".[5]Jones gave the species the name Calochilus praeltus, misspelling the Greek word and mentioning that its meaning is "high altitude, elevation; in reference to its occurrence at high altitudes". The misspelling has been copied by the Australian Plant Name Index.[2][3][4] Distribution and habitatThe lofty beard orchid grows with grasses in snow gum woodland. It is only known from Barrington Tops and the Mount Kaputar National Park.[2] References1. ^{{WCSP | 346305 | Calochilus praealtus}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15494393}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =261}} 3. ^1 {{cite journal |last1=Jones |first1=David L. |title=New taxa of Australian Orchidaceae |journal=Australian Orchid Research |date=2006 |volume=5 |pages=66–67}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|title=Calochilus praealtus|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/616266|publisher=APNI|accessdate=3 July 2018}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page =409}} 4 : Calochilus|Flora of New South Wales|Endemic orchids of Australia|Plants described in 2006 |
