It has a single dark green leaf with a reddish purple base and up to seven greenish to brownish flowers with red lines and a labellum with a reddish purple beard. DescriptionCalochilus uliginosus is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single dark green, linear to lance-shaped leaf, {{convert|100-400|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|5-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with a reddish purple base and which is fully developed when the first flower opens. Up to seven greenish to brownish flowers with red stripes and blotches, {{convert|20-26|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|150-600|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The dorsal sepal is oblong to egg-shaped, {{convert|9-13|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|5-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and the lateral sepals are a similar length but narrower. The petals are {{convert|4-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The labellum is flat, {{convert|14-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|6-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with short, reddish purple calli near its base. The middle section of the labellum has hairs up to {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and the tip has a glandular "tail" {{convert|2-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The column has two purple "eyes" joined by a red ridge. Flowering occurs from October to December.[2][3][4][5]Taxonomy and namingCalochilus uliginosus was first formally described in 2006 by David Jones and the description was published in Australian Orchid Research from a specimen collected near Albany.[6] The specific epithet (uliginosus) is derived from a Latin word meaning "marsh" or "swamp",[7] referring to the habitat preference of this species.[5]Distribution and habitatThe swamp beard orchid grows in dense undergrowth in seasonal swamps between Gingin and Albany in the Jarrah Forest, Swan Coastal Plain and Warren biogeographic regions.[2][5][8] References1. ^{{WCSP | 346311 | Calochilus uliginosus}} {{Taxonbar|from= Q15495793}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =263}} 3. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dixon|first2=Kingsley|last3=French|first3=Christopher|last4=Brockman|first4=Garry|title=Field guide to the orchids of Western Australia : the definitive guide to the native orchids of Western Australia|date=2013|publisher=Simon Nevill Publications|isbn=9780980348149|page=167}} 4. ^{{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia.|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=331|edition=3rd}} 5. ^1 2 {{cite journal |last1=Jones |first1=David L. |title=New taxa of Australian Orchidaceae |journal=Australian Orchid Research |date=2006 |volume=5 |pages=72–731}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Calochilus uliginosus|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/616340|publisher=APNI|accessdate=24 June 2018}} 7. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=514}} 8. ^{{FloraBase|name=Calochilus uliginosus|id=33160}} 5 : Calochilus|Orchids of Western Australia|Endemic orchids of Australia|Plants described in 2006|Endemic flora of Western Australia |
