}}Carlos Genaro Muñiz (born June 25, 1969) is a justice on the Florida Supreme Court.[1] He was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis on January 22, 2019. Previously, he was the general counsel of the United States Department of Education.[2]

Educations and clerkships

Muñiz received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. After law school, he clerked for José A. Cabranes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Thomas Aquinas Flannery of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.[3]

Career

Muñiz worked at the law firm McGuireWoods. He served as deputy attorney general and chief of staff to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, deputy general counsel for former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, deputy chief of staff and counsel in the office of the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, and as general counsel of the Florida Department of Financial Services.[4]

In 2013, Muñiz was involved in the discussions with Bondi that led her to take no action on consumer complaints against Trump University.[5] Muñiz represented Florida State University against a lawsuit brought by a student who accused quarterback Jameis Winston of raping her.[6] The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights investigated the case.[6]

On January 22, 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Muñiz to the Supreme Court of Florida.[7]
