LocationCastlemore Moat is about {{convert|2|km|mi}} northwest of Tullow and 2 kilometres west of the River Slaney. It is not to be confused with Castlemore House, a 19th-century country house 1 kilometre south of the motte.[1] History and archaeologyThe motte and bailey castle was constructed in the 12th century AD by Raymond FitzGerald (Raymond le Gros), one of the commanders of the Norman invasion of Ireland. The land of Forth O'Nolan was granted to Raymond and he married Basilia, sister of Strongbow. They lived together at Castlemore.[2] All that remains is the motte, an artificial hill about {{convert|9|m|ft}} high, and a standing stone measuring {{convert|170|by|45|by|30|cm|in}} with a Latin cross inscribed in it, with a suppedaneum (foot-rest at the base). The motte is not a perfect circle, but measures {{convert|18|m|ft}} east-to-west and {{convert|13|m|ft}} north-to-south.[3] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=CW®no=10300843|title=Additional Images: Buildings of Ireland: National Inventory of Architectural Heritage|website=www.buildingsofireland.ie}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.ie/books?id=aV7FBwAAQBAJ&pg=PT172&lpg=PT172&dq=Castlemore+Motte+&+Bailey+&+Cross+Slab&source=bl&ots=Y7aSLrjWu9&sig=arnelh-IJfgL7oZBBnfuKlRJQb0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CDEQ6AEwBDgKahUKEwjChpGMiInJAhUDXA8KHTdgCY8#v=onepage&q=castlemore&f=false|title=The Early Norman Castles of the British Isles (Illustrations)|first=Ella S.|last=Armitage|date=3 April 2015|publisher=Oliver And Boyd, Edinburgh|via=Google Books}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mocavo.com/Journal-of-the-Royal-Society-of-Antiquaries-of-Ireland-1906-Volume-36/482791/469|title=Mocavo and Findmypast are coming together - findmypast.com|website=www.mocavo.com}} 3 : Archaeological sites in County Carlow|National Monuments in County Carlow|Castles in County Carlow |
