释义 |
He worked at a newspaper, then studied engraving and art in Philadelphia, in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and — after making a tour of the South Seas — in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens. He settled in New York City in 1880; in 1882 went with the Marquis of Lorne through Canada, preparing sketches for Picturesque Canada; and in 1905 became a member of the National Academy of Design.[1] Most of his work was magazine and book illustration for stories of modern life, but he painted portraits and watercolours, and received the Evans Prize of the American Watercolor Society in 1890, and a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900.[1] Smedley died in Bronxville, New York on 26 March 1920.[2] Gallery{{Multiple image|header=Select works |total_width=800 |align=center |image1=William Thomas Smedley - One Day in June - 1909.7.62 - Smithsonian American Art Museum.jpg |caption1=One Day in June (1909) |alt1= |width1=938 |height1=1400 |image2=William Smedley - A Late Arrival - Google Art Project.jpg |caption2=A Late Arrival (1888) |alt2= |width2=4001 |height2=2846 |image3=Smedley Embarrassment Art of World vol.8.jpg |caption3=Embarrassment (1883) |width3=846 |height3=555 |image4= |caption4= |width4= |height4= |footer= |footer_align= }} References1. ^1 2 {{EB1911|inline=y|title=Smedley, William Thomas|volume=25|page=251|url=https://archive.org/stream/encyclopaediabri25chisrich#page/251/mode/1up}} 2. ^{{cite book|title=Benezit Dictionary of Artists|date=2006|publisher=Gründ|isbn=2700030702|page=1340}} External links{{Commons category}}
