词条 | Chalkie's Beach |
释义 |
The common name originates from a nickname for local businessman David Hutchen, whose yacht, the Banjo Paterson, frequented the beach as a destination in day cruises. "Chalkie" refers to Hutchen's use of a blackboard for scorekeeping in beer-drinking contests following the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The alternate name, "Stockyard Beach", comes from the presence of stockyards on the island built to house sheep in the 1920s and 1930s.[3] A fringing coral reef lies offshore, home to a variety of fish and sea turtles—including the green turtle and Hawksbill turtle—which feed on nearby seagrass.[1] The beach is a popular destination for snorkelling.[4] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/visit-the-reef/plans-of-management/whitsunday-plan-of-management/whitsundays-plan-of-management-setting-5-site-plans/haslewood-and-lupton-islands-site-plan|title=Haslewood and Lupton Islands Site Plan|publisher=Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority|accessdate=23 November 2015}} 2. ^{{cite book|last=Colfelt|first=David|title=100 magic miles of the Great Barrier Reef: the Whitsunday Islands|publisher=Windward Publications|edition=6th|year=2000|isbn=978-0958698917}} 3. ^{{cite book|last=Blackwood|first=Ray|title=The Whitsunday Islands: an historical dictionary|publisher=Central Queensland University Press|year=1997|isbn=978-1875998272}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://blog.queensland.com/2012/11/08/10-best-snorkelling-sites-queensland/|title=10 best snorkelling sites in Queensland|last=Southall|first=Ben|publisher=Tourism and Events Queensland|website=Queensland Blog|date=8 November 2012|accessdate=23 November 2015}} External links
