The award was instituted in 1980 by The Media Foundation with the first award being given in 1981 to Neerja Chowdhury. The most recent award was given to Priyanka Dubey of BBC in March 2019.[1][2] According to Business Standard the award is "perhaps India's longest running media award for women".[3]

Awardees have included pioneers in Indian media such as Homai Vyarawalla (India's first women photojournalist) as well as known and not so well known mediapersons such as Sucheta Dalal, Teesta Setalvad, Barkha Dutt, Tavleen Singh, Neha Dixit, Madhu Purnima Kishwar and Monalisa Changkija. A Pakistani journalist, Rehana Hakim, won the award in 1996. In 2012 a book was published titled "Making News, Breaking News, Her Own Way: Stories by winners of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons" which consisted of essays by and about the winners of the award.[4]

Background

Chameli Devi Jain

Chameli Devi Jain was born in Bahadarpur, Alwar, Rajasthan in 1910. She was married to a leader in the Congress Party. In 1932, she was arrested during the civil disobedience movement and sentenced to jail in Lahore. She was the first Jain woman to go to prison, returned as a hero, and continued working for community reforms such as fighting against the practice of compulsory veil or ghoongat. Her son is Lakshmi Chand Jain who is married to Devaki Jain (Padma Bhushan recipient), daughter of M. A. Sreenivasan, the Dewan of Gwalior.[2][5] Her grandson is Sreenivasan Jain, a journalist.

The Chameli Devi Jain Award

The Media Foundation was founded by B G Verghese, Lakshmi Chand Jain, Prabhash Joshi and Ajit Bhattacharjea and N S Jagannathan in 1979. The Chameli Devi Jain award was instituted at the initiative of The Media Foundation with B G Verghese as president emeritus and by the family of Chameli Devi Jain. It was first awarded in 1981. The criteria for selection includes social concern, dedication, courage and compassion among other things. Those eligible include journalists, photographers, cartoonists and newspaper designers. The entries are judged by an independent jury.[6]

Criticism

Nirupama Subramanian, who won the award in 2008, acknowledged the prize for a ‘woman journalist’ with some unwillingness, telling the awards committee “I am journalist, full stop."[37][26] With regard to why the gender based award exists a statement from BG Verghese provides perspective:[10]

{{Quote|text="...A young woman entrant to journalism today may wonder why these women are being celebrated. Because journalism as they know and understand it did not exist till the mid 1970s. A lot of the earlier awardees were true pioneers..."|sign=|source=}}
