Redland grew up in a musical family and learned to play a variety of instruments as a child. He was frequently active as a sideman in Swedish bands in the 1930s on saxophone, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet, and led his own bands, including on recordings, in the 1930s and subsequently.[2] Eventually, Redland became better known as a composer and arranger, working in jazz and popular music idioms.
