The first was born in Sunderland, played for Sunderland West End and Barnsley, and last appeared in the 1907–08 season. The second was born in Durham (whether city or county unspecified), played for Darlington, not then a Football League club so no dates given, and for Clapton Orient in 1909–10.[1] In their report of his joining Sunderland Rovers, the Sunderland Echo explicitly treats those career paths as one continuous career pursued by a single person.[2]}} Life and careerReed was born in Sunderland in 1885.[1] He played football for Sunderland West End before signing for Second Division club Barnsley ahead of the 1905–06 Football League season.[3] He made 11 appearances in the 1905–06 Football League season before returning to his former club.[1] Barnsley re-signed him for 1907–08,[4] during which season he made 16 League appearances.[1] Reed spent the 1908–09 season with North-Eastern League club Darlington, and then returned to the Football League with Clapton Orient.
