The region was part of the Appalachian coal field that stretched from northern Pennsylvania to central Alabama in the Cumberland Mountains region. This New South industry was initiated when the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad opened in 1854."[2] References1. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{National Register of Historic Places}}{{GeorgiaUS-NRHP-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url={{NRHP url|id=}}|title=National Register of Historic Places Registration: Chickamauga Coal and Iron Company Coke Ovens |publisher=National Park Service|author=Steven Moffson and Paul Archambault |date= October 31, 2008 |accessdate=February 3, 2017 }} with {{NRHP url|id=|photos=y|title=photos}} 4 : Industrial buildings and structures on the National Register of Historic Places in Georgia (U.S. state)|Buildings and structures completed in 1897|National Register of Historic Places in Walker County, Georgia|Coke ovens |
