Child Marriage in Sierra Leone. In 2017 in Sierra Leone, 39% of girls are married off before the 18 years old. 13% are married before they turn 15.^[1] Sierra Leone is the 18th highest nation in the world for child marriage.

Adolescent pregnancy is a driver of child marriage in Sierra Leone. 28% of girls and young women aged 15–19 have a child or are pregnant, and 22% have had sex with a man at least ten years older than them.^[2]

Girls are more at risk of child marriage than boys, with a median age at first marriage of 18 for women compared to 25 for men.^[2]

Girls at risk include those who are:

in the Eastern, Southern and Northern Provinces, where child marriage rates are over 40%, compared to 20% in the Western Province.
from certain ethnic groups.
vulnerable, including as a result of disability, sexual abuse and/or commercial sexual exploitation, and separation from parents.^[2]

Child marriage is most common in Port Loko, Kenema, Kono and Tonkolil.^[1]

Level of education

Girls are often seen as “leavers” who will eventually join another family through marriage. Many parents see little value in investing in their education.^[1]

Traditional customs

Some families reportedly marry off their daughters as soon as they develop breasts, or after they take part in a cultural initiation ceremony known as Bondo. In many areas, the practice of Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C) is also considered to be a marker of a girl’s readiness for marriage.

Adolescent pregnancy

Child marriage is often seen as the best solution if a girl becomes pregnant as it reduces the embarrassment on her family. In extreme cases, girls who have found “love matches” with older men on their own and have become pregnant have then been forced to marry strangers in order to enter into a “clean” marriage.^[1]
