Early lifeClarence Scharbauer Jr. was born on July 6, 1925 in Midland, Texas.[2][3] His father, Clarence Scharbauer Sr., was a rancher.[3] His paternal great-uncle was a large rancher from New York.[4] His paternal great-great-grandfather was an immigrant from Germany.[4] Scharbauer attended Texas A&M University for one semester,[5] until he dropped out in 1942 when his father was diagnosed with cancer.[1] During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.[3][5] CareerScharbauer inherited his father's 350,000-acre ranches and oil investments.[1][5] One of his ranches, Valor Farm in Pilot Point, Texas,[2] "produced more than one billion barrels of oil."[5] He was the recipient of the Golden Spur award for ranching.[2][3] Scharbauer served as the chairman of the First National Bank of Midland, but the bank failed.[5] Scharbauer was a horse breeder.
