Triggs had recently moved to Bogalusa from Jackson, Mississippi, with his wife Emma. He was not a leader but attended some marches of the Congress on Racial Equality; he was killed a month later. His body was found, shot in the head, next to a wrecked car registered to the wife of Homer R. "Kingfish" Seale, who was arrested for the murder. According to police chief Claxton Knight, there were "no racial implications in the death."[2] "Police insist the Triggs killing was not racially inspired."[3] Police were believed to be covering up the murder.[3] Seale and John W. Copling, Jr., both 36, were arrested August 1[4] on the charge of murdering Triggs.[5][6] They were represented by Baton Rouge attorney Osier Brown, who also represented Ernest Ray McElveen, charged with the murder of Oneal Moore near Bogalusa.[4] Seale was never tried; a jury, deliberating for less than an hour, found Copling innocent.[3] The details of the killing, and the link, if any, between Triggs and Seale have never been made public. Triggs' name is listed on the Civil Rights Memorial. His case was reopened under the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act, but has since been closed.[7] References1. ^{{cite news|title=Negro in Bogalusa is Shot to Death|newspaper=New York Times|date=July 31, 1966|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1966/07/31/archives/negro-in-bogalusa-is-shot-to-death.html}} {{Civil Rights Memorial}}{{civil-rights-movement-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|title=Police Arrest 2 In Slaying|newspaper=Anderson Daily Bulletin (Anderson, Indiana)|date=August 3, 1966|page=10|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/24478974/?terms=%22clarence%2Btriggs%22}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|contribution=Triggs, Clarence (1942-1966)|first=Pauline X.|last=Ruf|title=Encyclopedia of American Race Riots|year=2007|publisher=Greenwood|isbn=0313333009|url=http://www.encyclopedias.biz/encyclopedia-of-american-race-riots/47143-triggs-clarence-1942-1966.html}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite news|title=Bogalusa Murder Suspects Bonded|newspaper=Daily World (Opelousas, Louisiana)|date=August 17, 1966|page=9|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/227768459/?terms=%22homer%2Br.%2Bseale%22}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=2 Murder Suspects Are Freed on Bail|newspaper=The Town Talk (Alexandria, Louisiana)|date=August 17, 1966|page=27|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/216447370/?terms=%22clarence%2Btriggs%22}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=White Men Charged In Killing of Negro|newspaper=The Gazette and Daily (York, Pennsylvania)|date=August 6, 1966|page=31|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/359772383/?terms=%22clarence%2Btriggs%22}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Unsolved and overlooked murders: Investigating cold cases of the civil rights era|first=DeNeen L.|last=Brown|date=June 26, 2017|newspaper=Washington Post|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2017/06/26/unsolved-and-overlooked-investigating-cold-cases-of-the-civil-rights-era/}} 11 : 1966 murders in the United States|1943 births|1966 deaths|People from Bogalusa, Louisiana|People murdered in Louisiana|Hate crimes|Murdered African-American people|Racially motivated violence against African Americans|Unsolved murders in the United States|Washington Parish, Louisiana|African-American history of Louisiana |
