In 2006, he was appointed Deputy Private Secretary to Prince Charles and his wife, and was promoted to the rank of Private Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to Their Royal Highnesses in 2009. In 2012, he took up an appointment as ambassador to Morocco and simultaneously non-resident ambassador to Mauritania.[3] Alderton was appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in the 2013 New Year Honours list.[4] He rejoined The Royal Household in 2015 and is also a Trustee for the Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund.[5] See also
