After a year of duty on special teams, he got his chance to start in 2016. That year, he finished as an Outland Trophy finalist and unanimous All-American (the second in school history, with former NFL kicker Jason Hanson). Pac-12 coaches only named him an honorable mention selection after playing in all 13 games, starting 12, and using his quick feet and mammoth build to adeptly protect quarterback Luke Falk. They rectified that in 2017, placing O'Connell on the first team as he started all 13 games at left guard. The Associated Press voted him second-team All-American, as well.[6] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.wsucougars.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1536|title=Cody O'Connell - 2013 Football Roster - WSUCougars.com - Washington State University Athletics|publisher=}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2016/dec/13/grip-sports-mystery-wsus-all-american-cody-oconnel/|title=Grip on Sports: The mystery of WSU's All-American Cody O'Connell is hard to unravel|publisher=}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/wsu-cougar-football/massive-improvement-wsus-354-pound-cody-oconnell-has-gone-from-backup-to-unanimous-all-american/|title=Massive improvement: How WSU's Cody O'Connell went from backup to unanimous All-American in a year|date=19 December 2016|publisher=}} 4. ^{{cite news|last=Loh|first=Stefanie|title=Cody O’Connell becomes WSU’s first consensus All-American since 2005|date=December 12, 2016|newspaper=The Seattle Times|url=https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/wsu-cougar-football/cody-oconnell-becomes-wsus-first-consensus-all-american-since-2005/|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20170603183536/https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/wsu-cougar-football/cody-oconnell-becomes-wsus-first-consensus-all-american-since-2005/|archivedate=June 3, 2017|deadurl=no}} 5. ^{{cite news|last=Loh|first=Stefanie|title=Hercules Mata'afa, Cody O'Connell lead WSU Cougars as first team All-Pac-12 selections|date=December 5, 2017|newspaper=The Seattle Times|url=https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/wsu-cougar-football/hercules-mataafa-cody-oconnell-lead-nine-wsu-cougars-as-all-pac-12-selections/|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20171207105543/https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/wsu-cougar-football/hercules-mataafa-cody-oconnell-lead-nine-wsu-cougars-as-all-pac-12-selections/|archivedate=December 7, 2017|deadurl=no}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.nfl.com/prospects/cody-o'connell?id=32462018-0002-5598-311a-72b87183c760|title=NFL Draft & Combine Profile - Cody O'Connell|website=www.nfl.com|language=en-US|access-date=2018-10-29}} External links
