It is native to eastern Asia, where it is found in China, Japan, and Taiwan.[1] Its natural habitat is on damp rock faces, in forests and along streamsides.[2][1] It is a common species in Japan.[3] It is a perennial, growing to ~30 cm tall. It has large basal leaves. Flowers are purple and produced in the summer.[1][3] Its Japanese name (岩煙草) is "rock tobacco", in reference to the resemblance of its leaves to tobacco, and its preference to grow on exposed rock.[4] References1. ^1 2 Conandron ramondioides Flora of China 2. ^Conandron ramondioides (in Japanese), Flora of Mikawa 3. ^1 {{cite book |last=Ohwi |first=Jisaburo |date=1965 |title=Flora of Japan |url= |location= |publisher=Smithsonian Institution |page=813|isbn= |author-link= }} 4. ^Conandron ramondioides (in Japanese), Okayama University Plant Ecology Laboratory 1 : Gesneriaceae |
