It has a single heart-shaped leaf and a single dark green or light green flower with reddish maroon streaks and blotches and long, thread-like lateral sepals and petals. It grows in highland areas on both main islands. DescriptionCorybas confusus is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with a single heart-shaped to almost round leaf {{convert|9.5-19|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|11-21.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} with a petiole a further {{convert|3-31.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. There is a single erect, dark green or light green flower with reddish maroon streaks and blotches on a peduncle {{convert|0.5-8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and reaching to a height of {{convert|12-30|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}}. The largest part of the flower is the dorsal sepal which arches and partly forms a hood over the labellum. The lateral sepals are thread-like, whitish or reddish and {{convert|13-46|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The petals are similar to the lateral sepals but {{convert|27-75|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}}. The labellum is dark red with a pale green to yellowish centre, about {{convert|7-10|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and folded lengthwise forming a groove along its centre line. Flowering occurs from October to December.[2]TaxonomyCorybas confusus was first formally described in 2016 by Carlos Lehnebach from a specimen collected near Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park and the description was published in Phytotaxa.[1][3] The specific epithet (confusus) is a Latin word meaning "pour together" or "mingle",[4] referring to the similarity of the flowers of this species with those of C. obscurus and to the similarity of the leaf to those of C. macranthus and C. orbiculatus.[3]Distribution and habitatThis spider orchid grows at altitudes of between {{convert|1000 and 1100|m|ft|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} in leaf litter in southern beech forest and in scrub or grass tussocks. It is found on both the North and South Islands and may also occur on Chatham Island.[2][3] ConservationCorybas confusus is classified as "not threatened" by the New Zealand Government Department of Conservation Threat Classification System.[2]References1. ^1 {{WCSP | 520321 | Corybas confusus }} {{Taxonbar|from=Q42734614}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|last1=de Lange|first1=Peter|title=Corybas confusus|url=http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=7696|publisher=New Zealand Plant Conservation Network|accessdate=4 May 2018}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite journal|last1=Lehnebach|first1=Carlos A.|last2=Zeller|first2=Andreas J.|last3=Frericks|first3=Jonathan|last4=Ritchie|first4=Peter|title=Five new species of Corybas (Diurideae, Orchidaceae) endemic to New Zealand and phylogeny of the Nematoceras clade|journal=Phytotaxa|date=12 August 2016|volume=270|issue=1|pages=9–10|doi=10.11646/phytotaxa.270.1.1}} 4. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=227}} 4 : Acianthinae|Corybas|Endemic orchids of New Zealand|Plants described in 2016 |
