However, its use of Freudian references was seen as simple, with the film overall described as "somewhat indigestible". Despite being a Spanish co-production, it was not released in Spain.[2] It has been assessed as thematically aligned with Chalbaud's other films, despite being a different genre.[8] In this respect, it features "mirage-like memories" of David's mother;[8]:46 masks and costumes used to show illusion and performance of characters thematically;[8]:46-47 pop music in the background used to layer simple meaning;[8]:47 the religious name (David) for its protagonist;[8]:48 and the use of myths, specifically the "fairytale of the abandoned child".[8]:52 References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.fotogramas.es/peliculas-criticas/a4240/cuchillos-de-fuego/|title=CUCHILLOS DE FUEGO CRÍTICA|website=Fotogramas|language=Spanish|accessdate=28 December 2018}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.grancine.net/pelicula.php?id=2194#.XCah-hRjW-I|title=Vivir de imaginar|website=Gran Cine|language=Spanish|accessdate=28 December 2018}} 4. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|url=https://www.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/4ce2b7ac5d22d|title=CUCHILLOS DE FUEGO (1990)|website=BFI|accessdate=28 December 2018}} 5.
