It grows in coastal areas with sandy soils from sea level elevation to 975 feet.[2][3] The indigenous kaunaʻoa pehu (literally "swollen kaunaʻoa") Cassytha filiformis is a similar looking species with the same parasitic nature. It is an unrelated plant in the Laurel family Lauraceae which can be distinguished by it larger, coarser yellowish-green stems.[4] AppearanceCuscuta sandwichiana is a twining vine with thin, leafless yellow to yellow-orange stems and very small yellowish flowers which grow in small clusters along the stems.[5]Hawaiian useLei (garland): Kaunaʻoa kahakai was used for both lei o ka poʻo (head lei) and lei āʻī (neck lei)[6][7]Medicinal: Plants of both kaunaʻoa kahakai and kaunaʻoa pehu were pounded until soft, strained, and juice drunk to thin blood for women who had given birth or who had thick blood.[8]References1. ^{{cite web|last1=Bohm |first1=Bruce A. |title=Flowering Plants of Hawaii |url=http://www.floridata.com/tracks/bruce/HI/Cuscutaceae15.cfm |website=Floridata Plant Encyclopedia |accessdate=September 17, 2015 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150428161411/http://www.floridata.com/tracks/bruce/HI/Cuscutaceae15.cfm |archivedate=April 28, 2015 }} 2. ^{{cite book|last1=Wagner|first1=Warren L.|title=Manual of the flowering plants of Hawai'i|date=1990|publisher=University of Hawaii Press / Bishop Museum Press|location=Honolulu|pages=582–583|edition=Bishop Museum Special Publication 83}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Cuscuta sandwichiana|url=http://nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plant/view/Cuscuta_sandwichiana|website=Hawaiian Native Plant Propagation Database|accessdate=September 17, 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Cuscuta sandwichiana|url=http://nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plant/view/Cuscuta_sandwichiana|website=Hawaiian Native Plant Propagation Database|accessdate=18 September 2015}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Bornhorst|first1=Heidi L.|title=Growing native Hawaiian plants: a how-to guide for the gardener|date=1996|publisher=The Bess Press|location=Honolulu|pages=49–50.}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=McDonald|first1=Marie A.|title=Nā Lei Makamae--The Treasured Lei|date=2003|publisher=University of Hawaiʻi Press|location=Honolulu|pages=36–37}} 7. ^{{cite book|last1=Neal|first1=Marie C.|title=In Gardens of Hawaii|date=1965|publisher=Bishop Museum Press|location=Honolulu|pages=710–711}} 8. ^{{cite book|last1=Kaʻaiakamanu|first1=Kaluna M.|title=Native Hawaiian Medicine--Volume III|date=2003|publisher=First People's Productions|location=Honolulu|pages=58–59|edition=translated and edited by Malcolm Nāea Chun}} External links
