It usually has a single more or less round leaf and a flowering spike with up to fourteen small, green flowers with a greenish brown to pinkish, wedge-shaped labellum. DescriptionCyrtostylis tenuissima is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with a single more or less round leaf {{convert|10-30|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The leaf is green on both surfaces. Between two and fifteen green flowers about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|50-200|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} high. The dorsal sepal is erect and curved forward, {{convert|6-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|1-1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are a similar size to the lateral sepals, turn downwards and often cross over each other. The petals are {{convert|7-8|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and spread apart from each other. The labellum is wedge-shaped with a pointed tip, {{convert|4-5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|3|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide and slopes downwards. Flowering occurs from September to November.[2][3][4][5]Taxonomy and namingThe dwarf gnat orchid was first formally described in 1933 by William Henry Nicholls and Bede Goadby who gave it the name Acianthus tenuissimus. The description was published in The Victorian Naturalist from a specimen collected near Bayswater.[6][7] In 1987 David Jones and Mark Clements changed the name to Cyrtostylis tenuissima.[8] The specific epithet (tenuissima) is the superlative form of the Latin word tenuis meaning "thin", hence "thinnest".[9] Distribution and habitatThe dwarf gnat orchid grows under shrubs and grasstrees around winter-wet areas between Perth and Albany with disjunct populations near Esperance.[2][4][10] ConservationCyrtostylis tenuissima is listed as "not threatened" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife.[10]References1. ^1 {{WCSP | 54928 | Cyrtostylis tenuissima }} 2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =164}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia.|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=273|edition=3rd}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dixon|first2=Kingsley|last3=French|first3=Christopher|last4=Brockman|first4=Garry|title=Field guide to the orchids of Western Australia : the definitive guide to the native orchids of Western Australia|date=2013|publisher=Simon Nevill Publications|isbn=9780980348149|page=197}} 5. ^{{cite web|last1=Archer|first1=William|title=Dwarf mosquito orchid - Cyrtostylis tenuissima|url=http://esperancewildflowers.blogspot.com.au/2008/07/cyrtostylis-tenuissima-dwarf-mosquito.html|publisher=Esperance Wildflowers|accessdate=3 May 2018}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Acianthus tenuissimus|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/485266|publisher=APNI|accessdate=3 May 2018}} 7. ^{{cite journal|last1=Nicholls|first1=William H.|last2=Goadby|first2=Bede T.|title=A new terrestrial Australian orchid|journal=The Victorian Naturalist|date=1933|volume=50|page=22|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/125184#page/23/mode/1up|accessdate=3 May 2018}} 8. ^{{cite web|title=Cyrtostylis tenuissima|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/527074|publisher=APNI|accessdate=3 May 2018}} 9. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=792}} 10. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Cyrtostylis tenuissima |id=10942}} External links
