He was elected in the 2017 general election with a majority of 2,914 votes,[3] taking a seat previously held by Liberal Democrat John Pugh until his retirement.[4] Early life and educationMoore was born in Workington in Cumberland on 26 April 1980. He studied history at the University of Central Lancashire.[5] After graduating, he worked in various roles in the retail sector, gaining promotion to be a retail manager for Asda.[6] He was first elected as a councillor for the Conservative Party on Preston City Council on 3 May 2010 for the Greyfriars Ward.[7] Although the vote share for the Conservatives fell, he won by a large majority. He was re-elected with an increased majority on 5 May 2016. He has served as deputy leader of the Conservative group on the Council and as Chairman of the Preston Conservative Association. He unsuccessfully stood as the Conservative candidate in Preston West Ward in the Lancashire County Council elections in 2013 and 2017.[8][9] Member of ParliamentMoore stood unsuccessfully as the Conservative candidate for the Southport in the 2015 general election, losing to the incumbent Liberal Democrat John Pugh. After Pugh declined to stand again, Moore achieved a swing of 7.6% from the Liberal Democrats to take the Southport in the 2017 general election, becoming the first Conservative MP for the seat since 1997 and the first openly gay MP in the seat's history. The election also left him as the only Conservative MP on Merseyside.[10] In advance of the 2018 Preston City Council election, Moore resigned as a city councillor. Moore advocated his support for Britain leaving the European Union in the run up to being elected as an MP and has voted for cutting ties with the EU consistently since becoming an MP.[11][12] On 11 September 2017, Damien Moore was appointed to the Petitions Committee. The committee assists members of the public in raising issues directly.[13] Since January 2018 he has also served on the Science and Technology Committee.[14] Personal lifeMoore lives in Preston.[15] He is openly gay.[16][17][18] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.southportconservatives.org/news/damien-moore-selected-conservative-parliamentary-candidate-southport|title=Damien Moore selected as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Southport|website=Southport Conservatives}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.parliament.uk/biographies/commons/damien-moore/4669|title=Damien Moore MP|website=UK Parliament}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/southport-falls-tories-after-20-13160535|title=Southport falls to Tories after 20 years of Lib Dem rule|first=Emilia|last=Bona|work=Liverpool Echo|date=9 June 2017}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.southportvisiter.co.uk/news/southport-west-lancs/southport-won-conservatives-general-election-13159787|title=Southport won by Conservatives in General Election 2017|first=Emilia|last=Bona|work=Southport Visiter|date=9 June 2017|accessdate=9 June 2017}} 5. ^{{Who's Who | surname = Moore | othernames = Damien| id = U289500| volume = 2018 | edition = February 2018 online | accessed = 13 February 2018 }} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.southportvisiter.co.uk/news/southport-news/conservatives-choose-southport-parliamentary-candidate-12957377|title=Conservatives choose Southport Parliamentary candidate for General Election|first=Emilia|last=Bona|work=Southport Visiter|date=28 April 2017}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://preston.moderngov.co.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=50000160|title=Councillor Damien Moore|publisher=Preston City Council|date= |accessdate=23 April 2018}} 8. ^{{cite news |url=http://www.lep.co.uk/news/new-leaders-announced-in-preston-s-conservative-group-1-7258703 |title=New leaders announced in Preston’s Conservative group |work=Lancashire Evening Post |date=14 May 2015 |accessdate=9 June 2017}} 9. ^{{cite book |last=Dale|first=Iain|date= 7 September 2017|title=The Politicos Guide to the New House of Commons 2017|}} 10. ^{{cite news|title=Election results 2017: Conservatives gain Southport|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-40206314|work=BBC News|accessdate=23 April 2018|author=|date=9 June 2017}} 11. ^{{cite news|title=Southport constituency candidates for General Election 2017|url=https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/southport-constituency-candidates-general-election-13096638|work=Liverpool Echo|accessdate=23 April 2018|author=|date=26 May 2017}} 12. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/25630/damien_moore/southport||title=They Work for You|publisher=They work for you|date= |accessdate=23 April 2018}} 13. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/petitions-committee/membership/|title=Membership - Petitions Committee |website=parliament.uk|access-date=10 December 2017}} 14. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.parliament.uk/biographies/commons/damien-moore/4669|title=Damien Moore MP|publisher=GOV.UK |date= |accessdate=23 April 2018}} 15. ^{{cite news|title=Merseyside's only Tory MP accused of trying to hide the fact he is a Tory|url=https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/merseysides-only-tory-mp-accused-14561067|work=Liverpool Echo|accessdate=23 April 2018|author=|date=22 April 2018}} 16. ^{{cite news|url=http://southport.qlocal.co.uk/southport/news_list/Damien_Moore__As_a_gay_MP_I_support_Prime_Minister%27s_equal_rights_assurance-55021872.htm|work=Qlocal Southport|title=Damien Moore.
