Dan Henry Watches is a microbrand wristwatch manufacturer. The company is notable within the wristwatch industry for creating its entire collection with styles and features that honor classic timepieces of the past 80 years. Worn & Wound Company described the Dan Henry timepieces as being “in a class of their own.”[1] Watches You Can Afford called Dan Henry Watches “above and beyond what we typically see from a microbrand.”[2]

The company was founded in 2016 by Dan Henry, a watch collector with more than 1,500 vintage timepieces in his collection[3] who Time and Tide labeled as “one of the most knowledgeable collectors and watchmakers in the world.”[4] Hodinkee magazine described Timeline.Watch, Henry's interactive website for wristwatch collectors and historians, as "a kind of paradise if you are passionate about vintage watches."[5]

History

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil,[6] Dan Henry has been a collector since he was 10, when his father gave him a pocket watch.[7] Henry’s interest in “all things mechanical”[8] led to him building a collection of timekeeping devices of all sorts that he found at flea markets, antique shops, and online.[9] In February 2018, Henry's 1,500-watch collection[10] was described by Wristwatch Review as “incredible and frankly awe-inspiring.”[11]

Early in the 2000s, as premium vintage watches dramatically increased in value,[12] purchase of these timepieces moved out of reach for purchase by many buyers.[13] Nevertheless, interest in vintage watches continued to grow,[14] and in December 2014, Henry created an Instagram account and began posting photos and information about his watches. By March 2018, Henry’s Instagram account had more than 15,000 followers.[15] Henry’s experience with online connection to fellow watch enthusiasts prompted him to create a line of affordable new watches with the features of rare and high-priced classic timepieces.[16]

Dan Henry Watches: first series (2016)

In September 2016, Henry released his first line of watches: four models that Sofrep.com said “pay homage to the vintage styles of the 1930s, 1940s, 1960s and 1970s.”[17]

The first Dan Henry watches, each named for the year linked to the style of the timepiece, are: the 1970 Diver,[18] the 1968 Dragster,[19] the 1963 Pilot,[20] and the 1947 Dress Watch.[21] In January 2017, Henry added a fifth watch: the 1939.[22] In September 2017, Henry revised the 44-millimeter diameter 1970 Diver model by releasing a 40-millimeter version with the same features and colors as the original.[23]

Reception

Dan Henry Watches have received consistently positive reviews, with reporters citing their tribute designs, quality of construction, and finish of the dials.[24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36] Worn & Wound described the collection as “simply better than the competition, with more intricate designs and higher-end executions.”[37] Of Dan Henry’s business philosophy, Sofrep.com reported, “I’m just amazed that he was able to make such quality so affordable.”[38]

Criticism

In otherwise positive reports of the Dan Henry collection, some writers also mentioned various criticisms:[39] Wristwatch Review expecting more colors,[40] the 1947 model being slightly too large for the writer at Worn & Wound,[41] and luminescence for the 1970 Diver that Watch Report's writer said should be brighter.[42]

Critics from Monochrome and Worn & Wound also questioned Henry’s choice of some parts -- in particular for not using luxury quartz or automatic movements that some in the wristwatch industry consider necessary for prestige models, and instead using less expensive but proven quartz movements manufactured by Seiko and Miyota.[43][44] Worn & Wound also preferred sapphire crystals instead of less-expensive mineral crystals.[45]

However, each critic also said their concerns were outweighed by the overall quality and design of the Dan Henry line – especially when the price and value were considered.[46][47] Worn & Wound said that using quartz movements and mineral crystals as a cost-saving move is “a smart way to go about it,”[48] and Time and Tide described its own criticism of the watches as “really scraping the bottom of the barrel.”[49]
