Francis graduated from the University of British Columbia and Carleton University. In 2010, Francis was on the shortlist for the Pierre Berton Award awarded "for distinguished achievement in presenting Canadian history in an informative and engaging manner".[2] However, the award was given to Desmond Morton instead. In 2014, the City of Vancouver awarded Francis the Mayor’s Arts Award for Literary Excellence.[3] Francis is editor of the Encyclopedia of British Columbia (Harbour, 2000); 10 years in the making, it has been described as "a labour of love" by The Globe and Mail.[4] A best seller with 30,000 copies in print, now it is only available online for a fee,[5] and is known as KnowBC. There it continues to be updated and expanded by Daniel Francis.
