He ran unsuccessfully for re-election in November 2014. Smith died of natural causes at his home in Carefree, Arizona on October 24, 2014.[1][3] BiographySmith was born in Charleston, West Virginia on April 8, 1941. After graduating from Charleston High School, Smith served in the United States Coast Guard from 1959-1967.[4] He received his B.A. from the University of Charleston (then known as Morris Harvey College) in 1967.[1] Smith and his wife, Rita, moved to Arizona in 1993. He ran unsuccessfully for the Arizona State Senate in 1998, 2000, and 2002.[5] In 2004 he ran for the Arizona House of Representatives, and was elected to represent District 7.[6] When irregularities were discovered in his campaign finances, the Arizona Citizens’ Clean Election Commission recommended that he be removed from office. Smith unsuccessfully fought the removal, and stepped down on January 26, 2006.[6][7] In 2010 he again ran for the House, and was re-elected.[2] He served from January 2011 through January 2013, but lost his bid for re-election in 2012 when he was beaten in the Republican primary by 32 votes.[1] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite news | newspaper=Charleston Gazette-Mail | title=David Burnell Smith | date=November 5, 2014 | url=https://www.wvgazettemail.com/obituaries/david-burnell-smith/article_81160240-df12-5ad2-897a-480e6dbdf557.html | accessdate=February 24, 2019 |archiveurl=http://www.webcitation.org/76QcuNhxR |archivedate=February 24, 2019}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Smith, David Burnell}}2. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/digital/collection/azsession/id/115/rec/1 | publisher=State of Arizona | title=Session laws, State of Arizona, 2013 Volume 1, Fifty-First Legislature, First Regular Session, Chapters 1 to 201 | accessdate=February 19, 2019 |pages=xiii-x}} 3. ^{{cite web | url=https://ballotpedia.org/David_Smith_(Arizona_candidate) | publisher=Ballotpedia | title=David Smith (Arizona candidate) | accessdate=February 24, 2019}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.mediation.com/memberprofile/david-burnell-smith-85251-92.aspx | title=David Burnell Smith |publisher=Mediation.com |accessdate=February 24, 2019 |archiveurl=http://www.webcitation.org/76Qexivkt |archivedate=February 24, 2019}} 5. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.azleg.gov/house-member/?legislature=47&legislator=924 |publisher=State of Arizona |title=David Smith |accessdate=February 24, 2019}} 6. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/digital/collection/azsession/id/88/rec/1 |publisher=State of Arizona| title=Session laws, State of Arizona, 2005 Volume 1, Forty-Seventh Legislature, First Regular Session, Chapters 1 to 226 | accessdate=January 3, 2019 |pages=ix-x}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/arizona/politics/2014/10/27/arizona-former-lawmaker-burnell-smith-dies/18024923/ |publisher=The Arizona Republic |title=Former Arizona lawmaker Burnell Smith dies at 73 |date=October 27, 2014 |accessdate=February 24, 2019}} 4 : Members of the Arizona House of Representatives|Arizona Republicans|1941 births|2014 deaths |
