"Dave" Ward is the current sheriff of Harney County, Oregon. Early lifeWard was born in Drain, Oregon, to Jim, the son of a military veteran, and Linda Ward. In high school, he wrestled and played football. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a combat medic. He was deployed to Somalia, as part of Operation Restore Hope, and Afghanistan.[2][3] While serving as a machine gunner in Afghanistan, he also trained more than 1,500 Afghan soldiers, and created a literacy program and a bank for them.[3] Ward left the Army in 1994 and pursued a variety of jobs ranging from ranch hand to mill worker. During this time, he served in the Oregon National Guard. He returned to active service in 1998 and left the Army a second time in 2002.[2] Following his second separation from military service, Ward worked as a corrections officer in Lake County, Oregon from 2002 to 2007. He later went to work for the Harney County Sheriff's Office as a sheriff's deputy.[4][5] He had been the top cadet in his class at the Oregon Public Safety Academy, earning awards for marksmanship and understanding defensive tactics.[3] County sheriffWard was appointed sheriff of Harney County by the Harney County Court on December 5, 2014, and was sworn into office on January 2, 2015. His appointment was to fill the unexpired term of retiring sheriff David Glerup. The next election for sheriff of Harney County will take place in November 2016; Ward has announced he will stand in that vote.[6][7] Refuge occupation{{main article|Occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge}}Ward was serving as the Harney County sheriff in January 2016 when a loosely organized militia group occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The occupation was covered by national news media. Ward worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oregon State Police to maintain order and protect local citizens during the occupation.[5] During the standoff, The Los Angeles Times described Ward's evolving public relations savvy, noting that he began "holding events intended to draw media attention, manipulating the twitchy-fingered amplifier of social media and encouraging his supporters to speak up."[8] At one point during negotiations, Ward did not encourage armed militants to remove their firearms, which attracted criticism from Harney County Judge Steve Grasty.[3] There were a number of altercations between the sheriff and Harney County deputies and the militants for weeks before the occupation began. Ward said that one of the militants, Blaine Cooper, had followed his family when they went Christmas shopping, but militant Ryan Payne reported that Ward's mother had threatened him.[9][10] Altercations also occurred during the course of the occupation: the tires of Ward's wife's vehicle were found slashed, forcing her to temporarily go into hiding; and Ward's parents were followed by militants while leaving Ward's daughter's Christmas play.[3] Following the arrest of the final militant on February 11, 2016, Ward said that he was proud of his community. He also encouraged residents, who he noticed were divided by the political rhetoric of the militants, to express their issues to one another rather than staying silent.[11][12] During and after the occupation, several media outlets wrote op-eds praising Ward's handling of the incident.[13][14] On September 14, Ward was the first to testify against the militants.[15][16] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Harney County Sheriff|url=http://www.co.harney.or.us/sheriff.html|publisher=Harney County, Oregon|accessdate=January 5, 2016}} {{Malheur National Wildlife Refuge}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Ward, David}}2. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Zaitz|first1=Les|title=Army, rural values help Harney County sheriff face militants|url=http://www.oregonlive.com/oregon-standoff/2016/01/army_experience_rural_values_h.html#incart_big-photo|accessdate=January 11, 2016|work=The Oregonian|date=January 11, 2016}} 3. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web|url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/01/29/sheriff-oregon-standoff-no-stranger-battle---and-peacekeeping/79532862/|title=Sheriff in Oregon standoff no stranger to battle — and peacekeeping|publisher=USA Today|agency=Statesman Journal|date=February 3, 2016|accessdate=September 6, 2016|first=Gordon|last=Friedman}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=About Sheriff Ward|url=http://oregonsheriffs.org/oregon-sheriffs-by-county/harney-county/|publisher=Oregon State Sheriffs' Association|accessdate=January 5, 2016}} 5. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Zaitz|first1=Les|title=Sheriff says steps being taken to end militants' occupation of federal compound|url=http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2016/01/sheriff_says_steps_being_taken.html#incart_big-photo|accessdate=January 5, 2016|work=The Oregonian|date=January 5, 2016}} 6. ^{{cite news|last1=Howe|first1=Steve|title=David Ward appointed sheriff until next general election|url=http://burnstimesherald.info/2014/12/10/david-ward-appointed-sheriff-until-next-general-election/|accessdate=January 5, 2016|work=Burns Times-Herald|date=December 10, 2014}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Candidates File for Local Election |url=http://burnstimesherald.info/2015/12/09/candidates-file-for-local-election/ |accessdate=January 5, 2016 |work=Burns Times-Herald |date=December 9, 2015 }}{{dead link|date=December 2016 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} 8. ^{{cite news|last1=Duara|first1=Nigel|title=In Oregon standoff, local sheriff embraces the spectacle|url=http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-oregon-standoff-spectacle-20160110-story.html|accessdate=January 15, 2016|work=Los Angeles Times|date=January 10, 2016}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2016/apr/19/malheur-militants-harassed-deputies-for-weeks-befo/|title=Malheur militants harassed deputies for weeks before standoff, Oregon sheriff tells Knezovich|author=Culver, Nina|publisher=Spokesman-Review|date=April 19, 2016|accessdate=September 5, 2016}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.oregonlive.com/oregon-standoff/2016/04/spokane_sheriff_interviews_har.html|title=Spokane sheriff interviews Harney Sheriff Dave Ward, praises handling of Malheur takeover|publisher=The Oregonian (OregonLive.com)|date=April 20, 2016|accessdate=September 5, 2016}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.opb.org/news/series/burns-oregon-standoff-bundy-militia-news-updates/community-reactions-malheur-refuge-occupation-end/|title=Harney County Officials React To Occupation's End|work=Oregon Public Broadcasting|date=February 11, 2016|accessdate=September 6, 2016|first1=Bradley W.|last1=Parks|first2=Dave|last2=Blanchard|first3=Conrad|last3=Wilson}} 12. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/02/11/466468730/harney-county-sheriff-calls-for-dialogue-following-oregon-occupations-end|title=Harney County Sheriff Calls For Dialogue Following Oregon Occupation's End|work=NPR|date=February 11, 2016|accessdate=September 6, 2016|first=Laura|last=Wagner}} 13. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/index.ssf/2016/01/sheriff_dave_ward_the_true_pat.html|title=Sheriff Dave Ward, the true patriot in Harney County's spectacle: Editorial|work=Oregon Live|date=January 30, 2016|accessdate=September 6, 2016}} 14. ^{{cite web|url=http://katu.com/features/everyday-heroes/everyday-heroes-harney-county-sheriff-david-ward|title=Everyday Heroes: Harney County Sheriff David Ward|work=KATU|date=February 19, 2016|accessdate=September 6, 2016|first=Ian|last=Parker}} 15. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.oregonlive.com/oregon-standoff/2016/09/two_contrasting_portraits_of_r.html#incart_river_index_topics|title=Two contrasting portraits of refuge occupation emerge during opening statements|work=Oregon Live|date=September 13, 2016|accessdate=September 14, 2016|first=Maxine|last=Bernstein}} 16. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2016/09/harney_county_sheriff_dave_war.html#incart_river_index_topics|title=Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward testifies: 'I didn't go to pick a fight.
